The winners of Sports Shorts - the Radio Five Live and Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ writersroom drama writing competition - are announced today.

Entrants were asked to write a script for a short drama of up to 10 minutes based on their best sporting moment, whether real or imaginary, comical or poignant.

The winners are:

Rupert Potter from Cambridge with Heading It Like Mooney (football).

Mike Wolstencroft from Rochdale with Spooky or What (football).

Steve Ransom from Felixstowe with It's Much More Important Than That (football).

Stevie White from Carlisle with Hammered (athletics).

Daniel Gritten from Somerset with Hollywood Hero (baseball).

These five stories will be broadcast in Sport On Five every evening from Bank Holiday Monday (31 May).

The winners not only get the opportunity to hear their plays broadcast on national radio, but one lucky winner will also get a trip to Euro 2004.

The other four have won tickets to a UK sport event of their choice.

Such was the quality of the 1,100 entries, the panel of judges, including the actor James Nesbitt and Casualty's Kwame Kwei-Armah, felt that they couldn't just choose five, so another five highly commended stories have been commissioned to be broadcast at Christmas.

These stories will be:

Andrew Viner from London with Goal Difference (football).

Clive Mitchell from Devon with Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Advantage (subbuteo).

Ishtiaq Din from Middlesbrough with John Barnes Saved My Life (football).

Paul Wilson from Leeds with It's A Wonderful Sporting Life (tennis).

John Shepherd from Brighton with Radio, Radio (football).

Moz Dee, Commissioning Editor Five Live, said: "Sport is a dramatic experience, and our listeners have demonstrated that it can permeate every area of life.

"Five Live sports fans have risen to the challenge creating one of the most successful writing initiatives the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ has had.

"Working with the writersroom has been a pleasure. Look out for more new writing initiatives on Five Live."

Kate Rowland, the Creative Director, New Writing for the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ, said: "There has been an unprecedented response to this competition. There have been more entries that we have ever seen before, and they are of such high quality.

"It has been a really pleasant surprise!"

Notes to Editors
