United sign up to the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's Big Read
Leeds
United are hosting a special event at the Leeds United Learning
Centre at Elland Road this Sunday (7 December) to celebrate the
Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's Big Read.
Families
from clubs established at five libraries across the city will take
part in the event with children's author and international story-teller
Pat Ryan and reading promoter, Tom Palmer.

4Reading 2Together - or 442 for short - is a family reading
project created by Leeds United, Leeds Libraries and the National
Literacy Trust and is funded by the Barclaycard Free Kicks programme.
The
aim of 442 is to create a family reading culture by using football
to capture interest and inspire new ways of learning.
Juliet
Gibson, Community Relations Manager for Leeds United, said: "This
event is a great opportunity to celebrate the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's Big Read by
bringing the members of the five 442 clubs together to discuss their
favourite books, take part in reading activities and exchange ideas
for learning together as a family."
The
afternoon will feature a vote to find the favourite family book
plus readings from some of the family books which have made the
Top 21 – including WinnieThe Pooh, The Lion, The Witch and
The Wardrobe and The Wind In The Willows.

Learning Project Manager, Elizabeth Thornton, said the event was
an ideal way to celebrate the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's Big Read in which viewers vote
for their all-time favourite book - the result of which will be
announced on the final programme on 13 December.
She
said: "Almost one third of the books that have made it to the
Top 21 in the Big Read are family books and this event will give
everyone the chance to enjoy these books at the event.
"But
it is also a fun afternoon and there will be a treasure hunt, goody
bags, prizes and plenty of games and entertainment."
Councillor
Judith Blake, Executive Member for Learning and Leisure, said: "Leeds
City Council welcomes the Big Read because it encourages families
to learn together, it is so much more fun sharing the experience.
"We
hope this encourages more people to visit their local libraries."

In
April 2003, members of the public were asked to nominate their favourite
work of fiction. More than 140,000 people voted and The Big Read
Top 100 novels were announced in May in alphabetical order.

21 most popular – based on those votes - was announced in
The Big Read Top 21 revealed on Saturday 18 October on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ TWO,
in which Clive Anderson counted down the Top 100 from numbers 100
to 22, before revealing the top 21 books.

Clive
Anderson now presents seven weekly programmes, each featuring three
novels from the shortlist.
Over
the course of the series, the 21 works of fiction, each championed
by their celebrity advocate, compete for the public's votes.

can vote for their best-loved novel in the Top 21 in the following

Each
week, Clive Anderson summarises the arguments and follows the voting
