ABOUT THE Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ

White City goes environmentally friendly

The Media Village, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's new development in White City, London, has been awarded an "excellent" environmental rating under the BREEAM assessment.

The highest rating has been awarded for both the design and for the completed buildings. The Media Village is one of eight assessments carried out since 1998 that has achieved this award applying for a complete building.

The success of the project team, which includes Land Securities Trillium, Allies and Morrison, Gleeds, Bovis Lend Lease and Buro Happold, has demonstrated that environmental best practice can be delivered for media buildings.

The Media Village achieved high scores for management; health and well-being; transport - particularly for good cycling facilities and showers; for water, including a rain water collection system; and pollution control.

After consultation with the Association of Wildlife Trusts a "green" roof was also created as part of the development, with an idea to convert un-used roof area into a viable green space for the benefit of biodiversity.

The sedum roof, planted over the entrance, provides an insulation layer to keep in heat in winter, and let out cool vapours by evaporation in summer. This will create an oasis for native insects and other wildlife. The green roof is also low maintenance and absorbs pollutants and greenhouse gases from the busy A40 nearby.

The development has been designed by award-winning architects Allies and Morrison who alongside the team made sure the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's sustainability values were incorporated into the design.

Bovis Lend Lease were the main contractor on site who managed the social and environmental impacts of the construction process.

Buro Happold, in addition to being the structural and services engineers, were appointed to make sure that the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's environmental aims were met at all stages of the development.

The development is being financed through the partnership between the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ and Land Securities Trillium.

Notes to Editors

The Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) rating is the world's leading system for assessing the range of environmental impacts associated with buildings.

Buildings are assessed against performance criteria such as considerate constructors, energy efficiency, transport emissions and ecological impact and are awarded credits based on their level of performance.
