Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ
has poetic vision for White City
The
Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ has unveiled a unique and collaborative project – Voices
Of White City.
The
project is an integral part of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's far-reaching building and
public art initiative across the UK and marks the first stage in
the opening of the Media Village in West London to Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ employees.
Voices
Of White City will bring together professional and amateur writers
in a project encompassing all forms of written and performed language
which will be visualised by John Morgan.
The
Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ will actively encourage the local community to be part of the
initiative through a variety of workshops that will enable local
residents to submit their own "voices" or texts.
This
innovative scheme to integrate buildings, public art and the voices
of the local community demonstrates the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's strategy to connect
on every level with its audiences.
John
Smith, Director of Finance at the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ, who is leading the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's
overall public buildings and arts project, commented:
"Voices
Of White City is an exceptional project that fuses public art with
the local community.
"It
is one of a series of public art projects that over the next few
years will directly connect the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ with its audiences throughout
the country in surprising and unusual ways."
Poet
Laureate, Andrew Motion, will work on five pieces together
with John Morgan to launch the project.
The
first will be integrated into the landscaped 92-metre approach to
the main entrance of the new buildings by Allies and Morrison.
Drawing
on texts submitted from local people of all ages and backgrounds,
John Morgan will then re-interpret them as permanent and temporary
installations across the White City Media Village and surrounding
area.
Various
media will be used, from LED screens and posters to live readings,
permanent engravings onto the buildings themselves and three dimensional
sculptures.
White
City will literally be transformed into a living, organic art exhibit
– probably the first time that art has been used on such a
large public scale in one area – and will reflect a legitimate
cross-section of the people who work at the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ and live within
the local community.
Over the next
three years, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ will undertake one of the most far-reaching
public building and arts initiatives in the UK, underlining its
commitment to championing new talent and creativity in the UK.
Voices
Of White City was initiated and developed by art consultants, Art
Project Management.

1.
Andrew Motion is currently Professor of Creative Writing at Royal
Holloway & Bedford New College. He was Professor of Creative
Writing at the University of East Anglia from 1995-2003.
He
was named Poet Laureate in 1999 and is a Fellow of the Royal Society
of Literature.
2.
John Morgan studied Typography & Graphic Communication as his
first degree and has worked extensively in the UK and abroad as
well as writing for various design journals and teaching.
He
was a founder member of Workplace Co-operative 115 – a new
building project intended for use by designers, makers and artists
and he continues studio practice with amongst others, The Serpentine
Gallery, Hamilton's Gallery, Byam Shaw School of Art and Fotanka.
