RADIO DERBY

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Derby nominated for five prestigious Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Local Radio awards

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Derby has been nominated for no fewer than five awards at this year's Frank Gillard Awards which honour the achievements of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Local Radio in England.

The nominations were announced yesterday (9 September) and Radio DerbyΒ’s are best breakfast programme, coverage of a news story, outside broadcast, sports programme and a diversity award.

Radio Derby will be hoping to follow its success at the Sony awards this year where it won the Gold award in the News Output category.

Despite not receiving any nominations at last year's Frank Gillard Awards, Radio Derby will be hoping to emulate Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Leeds which took home four Gillard awards in 2002.

The breakfast programme and news story nominations centre on an exclusive about the Queen's Jubilee celebrations in Derby's Pride Park stadium.

An investigation by Radio Derby raised concerns about the apparently charitable nature of the event.

The Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire and one of his deputies (the county's former Chief Constable) were called to account.

Radio Derby's outside broadcast nomination is for coverage of the Prince of Wales as he "turned up the ball" at the Ashbourne Royal Shrovetide football game.

It's an event steeped in centuries of history and tradition as two local teams, watched by thousands, move through the town trying to reach one of the two goals at opposite ends of the town.

The action starts when the invited guest is paraded through the streets after attending the traditional lunch at the Green Man Hotel.

The eight hour live outside broadcast (simultaneously broadcast on the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's website for Derbyshire) covered every aspect of the Prince's visit.

In April 2003 Damon Hague became the first boxer from Derby to win a World Championship, the WBF Middleweight title.

He knocked out Manchester's Wayne Pinder in a rematch, 11 weeks after being beaten by Pinder for the vacant title.

Both fights were broadcast on Radio Derby and the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's website for Derbyshire.

To mark this first for Derby, which has generated a lot of pride in the city, Radio Derby compiled a documentary telling the story of Damon Hague's route to the world title.

As well as extracts from the boxing specials, additional material following Hague's success was gathered by Ross Fletcher, the documentaryΒ’s producer and presenter.

The diversity award nomination is a compilation of material by the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ local radio station.

It includes an interview, during Black History Month, with two nurses from the Caribbean who recalled their first experiences of life in Derby.

As part of a week long series on the Breakfast Show about domestic violence, a gay man and an Asian woman told their stories.

Another feature on the Breakfast Show about same-sex blessings generated calls from listeners including a woman who spoke movingly about dealing with her daughter being gay.

Radio Derby also produced a documentary called I See What You Say about Derby's deaf community.

Simon Cornes, Managing Editor of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio Derby, says: "This is a fantastic achievement.

"Five nominations from our peers in the radio industry is testament to the skill, creativity and hard work of the team at the station.

"Coming on the back of a Sony Gold Award, an Andrew Cross award and very strong audience figures, this has crowned an incredible cluster of accolades."

The Gillard winners will be announced on 6 October at a special awards ceremony at the National Museum of Film, Photography and Television in Bradford.

Sonia Deol of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Asian Network is the ceremony presenter and she will be joined by Greg Dyke, Director-General of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ, to present the coveted miniature busts of Frank Gillard to the winners.

The awards are named in honour of the founder of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Local Radio in England, Frank Gillard, who died in 1998.
