Jason Carter

Event Director, Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra London 2012, and Editor, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Introducing

As Event Director Jason Carter is responsible for all events and activity connected with London Festival 2012 across both networks and he will lead the station's major outdoor music event which is being planned in East London for the London Festival 2012.

He is also Editor of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Introducing – the pan-Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ initiative supporting new and unsigned artists and bands. His remit is to consolidate all contemporary, unsigned music from around the corporation, providing unique opportunities for artists, and improve new music offerings for audiences.

Under Jason's leadership, over 40 Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Introducing local radio shows have been launched to provide broadcast support to new musicians across the UK. The initiative also runs across Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 1, 6Music, Radio 1Xtra, Asian Network and at bbc.co.uk/introducing.

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Introducing launched in June 2007 with its own stage at Glastonbury and has championed more than 600 new artists with some unique opportunities since this date. Acts such as Florence And The Machine, Ting Tings and Chipmunk attribute their early recognition and success to the offering.

Over 45,000 artists have now uploaded their music to the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ since early 2009, the first formal way to get your music to the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ and heard. It now has stages at many of the major UK festivals and its website was named as the "Best Place to Discover Music" in the UK, at the BT Digital Music Awards 2010.

In February, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Introducing held its first Musicians' Masterclass across London's Abbey Road and Maida Vale Studios. The event, which was focused on connecting under the radar artists from across the UK with artists and industry professionals from the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ and the live music and recording industries, was a mix of practical sessions, special insight sessions and closed with a quirky unique version of Question Time.

As well as Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ DJs such as Zane Lowe and Tom Robinson, musicians heard from top artists including the Kaiser Chiefs, Mark Ronson, Tinchy Stryder, Calvin Harris, Labrinth and Gary Barlow. In 2011, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Introducing has been nominated for a Sony Award for best multiplatform coverage.

Jason's previous role was Editor, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra Live Music & Events, and he has an outstanding track record in creating and delivering large-scale events.

Appointed as Editor in January 2007, Jason's live events credits include creating and delivering Radio 1's annual flagship event – Radio 1's Big Weekend. It now sits at the very heart of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ as one of the corporation's key events.

Jason has also overseen major artists' moments on Radio 1, including Eminem at Milton Keynes Bowl and Take That and Foo Fighters shows at Wembley.

Ground-breaking new events like 1Xtra Live (the only free black music event in the UK) and Switch Live (the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's first under-18s live event) – which in 2010 became Radio 1's Teen Awards, were introduced under Jason's tenure.

He also commissioned Radio 1 activities at major festivals including Reading and Leeds, Glastonbury, T in the Park and Creamfields.

Before January 2007 Jason was Executive Producer (2001-2007) for Live Music & Events at Radio 1 – responsible for the commissioning, strategic planning and delivery of the full Radio 1 live music portfolio of events.

He joined Radio 1 in August 1997 as an events co-ordinator, and soon became an events manager, looking after Radio 1 event branding, promotion and external media partnerships.

Before moving to Radio 1, Jason spent time as a music agent, label manager and artist manager before stepping into live music promotion at one of the biggest UK music promoters, The Mean Fiddler (now known as Festival Republic).
