Starring
Jon Pertwee as the third Doctor, The Mutants was first transmitted
in 1972.
It's
the 30th century. The Doctor and Jo are on a mission. They are to
deliver a sealed message pod to an unknown party aboard a Skybase
which is orbiting the planet Solos.
Solos
is a colony of earth and due to gain independence but its Marshal
is determined to prevent this as the earth itself is practically
uninhabitable. He plans to use a machine to transform Solos' atmosphere
into one more suited to humans. To ensure his plans go ahead unimpeded,
he has the earth administrator murdered.
Meanwhile,
a young Solonian gets falsely accused of the murder so he takes
Jo and flees with her back to his planet. The Doctor follows them
all the way back and into to an old thaesium mine. The Solonian
turns out to be the intended recipient of the message pod, which
opens automatically for him revealing a message written on stone
tablets in ancient script.
The
Doctor retrieves a crystal from a cave where the radiation is concentrated
and returns to the Skybase to analyse it. Here, he is recaptured
by the Marshal who holding his friends hostage and who demands that
the Doctor make the atmosphere-changing machine work.
Is
it possible? Will the Doctor go ahead? What will happen if the Marshall
gets his wish?
"With
its strong anti-apartheid and anti-colonial messages [the Mutants]
gives a good illustration of the increasingly moralistic tone that
producer Barry Letts was bringing to the series at the time."
