20.01.03 The
Archers are off to sunny Spain

Worldwide licenses The Archers to Onda Cero International
British
ex-pats and holidaymakers in Spain can now reminisce about rural
English life in Ambridge, thanks to a new broadcasting license agreement
between Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio International, part of Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Worldwide, and Onda
Cero International, the favourite radio station for Brits in the
Costa del Sol and the Costa Blanca. The agreement brings Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio
4's ever-popular The Archers to Spain for the first time.
From
27 January, The Archers will broadcast on Onda Cero shortly after
11am every weekday, with a repeat episode just after 6pm. There
will also be an omnibus edition on Sundays between 11.00am and 12.15pm.
Barry
Mitchell, Programme Controller, Onda Cero International said: "Our
listeners may have left England behind for the Costa del Sol, but
they still love to have a taste of home, especially when it comes
to a favourite radio or TV programme. Many of them will have been
regular The Archers listeners back in Britain, so they will be delighted
to have the chance to continue to follow the goings on in Ambridge,
albeit from sunnier climes."
Simon
Kendall, Head of Radio International, added: "The Archers is
one of the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's best-loved radio programmes, as well as the world's
longest-running radio drama, so it's sure to prove a great success
with listeners in Spain."
The
Archers was first broadcast in 1951 and has a loyal and longstanding
fan base, attracting over 4 million listeners each week. The trials
and tribulations of the Archer family and the other inhabitants
of Ambridge have provided entertainment to generations of radio
listeners. More recently, the programme has become known for tackling
the topical and often controversial issues faced by Britain's rural
communities.
70%
of the Costa del Sol's ex-patriot community is British and most
of them (about 750,000) regularly tune in to Onda Cero International
to listen to English-speaking radio presenters offering a combination
of music and chat. The station also attracts a large number of non-British
ex-pats so it might not be long before The Archers attracts a truly
international following on the Costa del Sol.
Through
Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio International, The Archers can be heard in a number of
other countries including Germany, Canada, Cyprus, and the Balkans,
making Ambridge one of the most famous English villages in the world.
