Good Food Magazine asks "What food do you hate?"
Tripe. Oysters. Kidneys. Semolina, Peanut butter - Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Good Food
Magazine readers have been voting for their most hated foods.
With
tripe, squid, junket, kidneys and tofu in the tope 20 it seems we've
a tendency to shy away from foods with a slimy, slithery, jelly
like-like consistency. There are surprises - Brussels sprouts only
limp in at 24th place while cabbage doesn't even make the top 30.
Offal is widely disliked while rabbit makes the list perhaps less
because of the taste and more because they are popular pets.
Experts
reckon we are all born with a sweet tooth and tend to naturally
dislike bitter flavours, as part of our survival mechanism designed
to help us avoid poisonous foods.
Previous
experience plays a part too - if you were forced to eat cabbage
at school, you may convince yourself you hate it because of those
unhappy memories. And we tend to dislike foods that come from slimy
or ugly animals!
Few
of the foods on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Good Food Magazine's list - which appears in
the August issue (on sale 8 July) - are fatty or sweet because we
are designed to like such foods as a good source of calories when
food is scarce.
