Helen Mirren - Prime Suspect Will Return

The actress Helen Mirren tells this week's Radio Times that she is in alks to revive her role as Superintendent Jane Tennison in the drama Prime Suspect.

The programme, broadcast on ITV, won BAFTA television awards in 1991 and 1993 for best drama serial, and the 56-year-old says now is the time for it to return.

"I wanted to give it a break until I could be seen for something else," Mirren reveals in the magazine. "But now enough time has passed, we are discussing just how the character could come back, and I'm looking forward to it."

In September 2000, Prime Suspect was named at number 68 in the BFI's TV 100 chart of the best British programmes in television history.

During the seven-year break since filming Prime Suspect 5, Mirren has won numerous awards, including an Emmy for the title role in The Passion of Ayn Rand and best supporting actress from the New York Film Critics for Gosford Park.

This interview is taken from the 12 - 18 January issue of Radio Times, on sale on Tuesday 8 January.
