Desert Island Discs is 60 years young!

The much-loved and legendary Radio 4 show Desert Island Discs celebrates its 60th birthday in March 2002. To celebrate this auspicious occasion a star-studded concert is to be held at the Royal Festival Hall on 20th March 2002. Hosted by the presenter Sue Lawley, and in the style of 'An Audience WithΒ…', the concert will feature a sensational line-up of the show's celebrity castaways from the past ten years, including such luminaries as Lesley Garrett, Tasmin Little and John Harle. The concert will be broadcasted on Radio 4 and also transmitted as the main highlight at the launch celebrations for the new TV channel Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ FOUR - the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ's new digital arts and culture channel.

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Music will be celebrating this 60th birthday event by re-promoting the hugely successful CD set The Very Best Of Desert Island Discs. Originally released in November last year, this superbly packaged three CD set features thirty castaway classics.

The Very Best Of Desert Island Discs is the definitive album in the Desert Island Discs CD series, drawing together some of the finest music from the last 60 years of this perennial programme, along with ten newly selected pieces chosen by Sue Lawley. It features a fantastic array of much-loved tunes by some of the world's greatest composers including Bach, Beethoven, Gershwin, Mendelssohn and Mozart. As with the previous Desert Island Discs releases, Sue Lawley has contributed fascinating and extensive sleeve-notes regarding some of the best castaways who have appeared on the show and their musical selections.

Over 16,000 copies of The Very Best Of Desert Island Discs have been sold since November and it remains in the Classical Top 20 lists - a remarkable achievement for a classical compilation and a worthy tribute to a legendary show.

The Royal Festival Hall concert will be held on 20th March 2002 after which Sue Lawley will be signing copies of the CD.
