On Friday 21 October, the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ World News Horizons series visits Northern Ireland and Switzerland to explore the future of air transportation.

Horizons presenter, Adam Shaw, looks at the next generation of passenger jets and learns how aircraft manufacturers are tackling higher fuel costs and tighter emissions standards by investing in the development of ever lighter composite materials. Adam also visits Geneva to see Solar Impulse, a group of entrepreneurs who are planning to make the first flight across the Atlantic in 2015, in a plane powered entirely by energy from the sun.

In the last decade there's been a 41% increase in air passenger traffic, a growth rate that is set to continue to 2020 and beyond, but there are big issues facing the industry as costs rise and tougher emission laws are passed.

Adam speaks to experts including Colin Elliott, Vice President Engineering & Business Development, Bombardier and Philippe Poutissou, Vice President of Marketing for Commercial Aircraft, Bombardier in Belfast, and Andre Borschberg, CEO and Co-Founder, Solar Impulse.

This ten-part second series of Horizons travels across the globe to destinations including Brazil, China, Israel and Turkey to find out about the business ideas that could shape mankind's future.
