The 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ – the 鶹Լ’s international news services celebrate the global game

As Africa plays host to the FIFA World Cup for the first time this June, the 鶹Լ’s international news services will offer a unique global perspective on events in the build-up to, and during, the tournament.

From within this diverse continent and beyond, special interactive programming will connect fans around the world, while the 鶹Լ’s multi-lingual services will offer comprehensive sporting analysis,a mix of news and current affairs and local, regional and international insights.

Pre-tournament programming highlights include Africa Kicks, a journey through the region of West Africa that has produced a wealth of international football talent.The Power and the Passion, a new four part series on 鶹Լ World Service English, in which writer and broadcaster David Goldblatt examinesthe relationship between football and fans, as he travels to four fiercely contested local derby games in Ghana, Italy, Egypt and the UK. George Weah and Didier Drogba’s exploits off the pitch are the focus ofLife on the Edge on 鶹Լ World News. 鶹Լ Swahili will be producing a special series onthe ‘health’ of football in East Africa, while 鶹Լ Hausa will examine the significance of the World Cup for Africa.

Over the course of the tournament, 鶹Լ World Service will have a special daily multimedia show, World Cup Have Your Say, which moves the football pundits aside to let fans air their views. The World Today, presented by Komla Dumor and Ros Atkins, will be live from Soweto, and special editions of Sportsworld with Russell Fuller will feature interviews, analysis and insight covering the full spectrum of international teams. World Football will have a special focus on football in South Africa and the impact of apartheid on the game.

On 鶹Լ World News, Football Focus will bring audiences contributions and analysis from four times Champions League winner Clarence Seedorf, World Cup winner Juergen Klinsmann, England legend Alan Shearer and Togolese international and Manchester City starEmmanuel Adebayor. Sport Today with Sean Fletcher will provide daily news and updates on all the stories from the tournament.

Fast Track, the flagship sports show presented by Farayi Mungazi on 鶹Լ World Service, will feature news, interviews and special reports around the tournament.

A diverse range of the 鶹Լ’s international non English-language services will be bringing the atmosphere, stories and news to audiences around the world.For 鶹Լ Arabic, Sherif El-Sherif is hosting a multimedia show, while 鶹Լ Persian will be examining the cultural, social and economic impact of the tournament on South Africa. 鶹Լ Brasilwill be following the fortunes of the Brazilian team and finding out what the Brazilian organisation for the 2014 tournament can learn from South Africa. 鶹Լ.com/worldcup is offering an extensive range of video and interactive content to ensure football fans are kept fully up to date with the competition online. Video collections will include Road to South Africa, featuring the qualifying goals that won teams their place in the tournament, as well as 32 team profile vignettes of the teams themselves.

Africa Kicks – on the 鶹Լ’s international news services

As Africa prepares to host the World Cup, the 鶹Լ goes on a journey across the continent’s football ‘factory’ – the region in West Africa that produces the highest number of international players. Names like Didier Drogba of the Ivory Coast, Emmanuel Adebayor of Togo, Michael Essien of Ghana and Nwankwo Kanu of Nigeria, are known to fans around the world for their English Premier League andinternational exploits. Africa Kicks will focus on countries which have produced a wealth of football talent- and attract huge international business interest fromacross the world. Africa Kicks will explore the political, economic and football hopes, dreams and challenges of this region in a series of multimedia reports. In the Shadow of the Stadium, from Friday 4 June, 19:00. South-African Audrey Brown goes to the area around Johannesburg’s refurbished Soccer City stadium – the venue for the opening match and the final – to meet the people who are living around the stadium and are directly affected by the tournament, to find out what impact the World Cup will have on their day-to-day lives.

The Power and the Passion a new four part series from Monday 7 June, 19:00. While many football fans around the world will be avidly debating and agonising over the fate of their nations in June, it is often at the domestic club level that the game finds its most passionate support. The Power and the Passion, follows David Goldblatt as he travels to four very different football games, all big local derbies, in Italy, Egypt, Ghana and the UK, to experience the build-up and pitch action from the perspective of the fans.

South Africa's Path to Freedom, from Wednesday 9 June, 19:00. Nobel Prize-winning author Wole Soyinka travels from his native Nigeria to the host country of World Cup 2010 - South Africa - to assess the past and present of the Rainbow Nation through the eyes of its finest writers. Wole Soyinka fought apartheid from outside South Africa during the years of oppression and conflict. He now makes a special journey to meet some of the key writers who lived through the turbulent years, including fellow Nobel Prize winner Nadine Gordimer, as well as Albie Sachs, South Africa’s Poet Laureate Keorapetse Kgositsile, playwright Athol Fugard and academic and writer Antjie Krog.

鶹Լ Hausa will be running a series of news reports in the build-up to the tournament, examining the significanceof the World Cup for African nations. 鶹Լ Hausawill also feature profiles on the stars to watch and will weigh up the chances of all the African teams competing in the tournament.

鶹Լ Mundo will be following playersfrom the Spanish-speaking world, who areparticipating inMi Primer Mundial (My First World Cup – see page 7 for full details).

鶹Լ Swahili - Mbona hawako (Why Aren’t They There?) is a series of special reports from Monday 24 to Saturday 29 May, 15.30 on radio, online and on mobile phones via . 鶹Լ Swahili’s Peter Musembi visits Kenya, Ethiopia and Democratic Republic of Congo to explore why the Eastern Africa region always has to watch from the sidelines when it comes to the World Cup, with all slots for the continent dominated by West African nations. Countries from that region have not made any meaningful impact at the continental African Cup of Nations for the last three decades and a history of leadership wrangles has adversely affected the game there. Peter meets veterans who represented the DRC, then known as Zaire, in the 1974 World Cup and talks to them about their experience.

Football and politics are the focus of Life on the Edge from Saturday 5 June, 04:30. The first programme follows George Weah – the former World, European and African Player of the Year, as he prepares for his second campaign attempt to become President of Liberia. The second episode focuses on Didier Drogba, the Ivory Coast striker who, along with his mother Clothilde, is campaigning in his home country for this year’s promised elections to be held in peace.

Have You Heard from Johannesburg? From Saturday 5 June, 15:10, features four stories from the original seven-part series, which chronicles the history of the global anti-apartheid movement that took on South Africa's entrenched apartheid regime. Through news footage from the time and interviews with many of those involved, the series visits the sports arenas, cathedrals, embassies, boardrooms, fruit stands, beaches, concerts and petrol stations where thefight against apartheid took place, both inside and outside South Africa.

The impact of football on the lives of a range of people is the focus of African Football Shorts. These programmes reveal the human stories behind Africa’s first World Cup. Amongst these are the tales of an 83-year-old grandmother who plays football for South Africa, of a video hall in Kibera, Kenya, where customers crowd in to watch football games and of the Para Soccer League in Lagos, Nigeria. Sportsworld, the flagship global sport programme hosted by Russell Fuller, will be in Johannesburg with six special World Cup editions on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 June, Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 June, and Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 July.

In addition, Russell will be hosting weekend editions of World Cup Have Your Say, Saturdays and Sundays from 12 June, 17:30-18:00.

World Football, on Saturday 12 June will be profiling the history of football in South Africa, examining the impact of apartheid on the game. It includes a profile of football on Robben Island and the Makana Football Association, a body formed by political prisoners on the island.

World Cup Have Your Say - talking a good game
While coverage of action on the pitch will be dominated by the insight and opinions of a host of football experts, for the secondconsecutive World Cup tournament, 鶹Լ World Service will be giving football fans around the world a daily opportunity to have their say about the action, drama and tears on and off the pitch. Presented by Ros Atkins and anchored from Soweto, World Cup Have Your Say will be a daily half-hour multimedia discussion show, in which the pundits will step aside and let the fans decide on the tournament talking points, from chants to cheats, referees to vuvuzelas. Komla Dumor and Ros Atkins will be presenting The World Today, 鶹Լ World Service’s flagship news and current affairs show, from Soweto, bringing audiences the atmosphere and finding out first-hand about the impact of the tournament on local residents. Fast Track the flagship sports show for Africa on 鶹Լ World Service, presented by Farayi Mungazi, will be covering all the latest news from the tournament on Mondays and Fridays from 16:00.

The interactive discussion showAfrica Have Your Say, presented by Vera Kwakofi, will debating a range of issues and topical news subjects over the course of the tournament. Africa Have Your Say on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during the tournament at 16:00.

Football Focus will come live from the 鶹Լ’s Cape Town studio, offering the latest news and previews on 鶹Լ World News, from the 32 teams at Africa's first ever World Cup. The team will include contributions and detailed analysis from four times Champions League winner Clarence Seedorf, World Cup winner Juergen Klinsmann, England legend Alan Shearer and Togolese International and Manchester CityEmmanuel Adebayor. 鶹Լ Afrique (French for Africa) will broadcast daily round-ups of the latest news and results from the tournament, both on radio and online. There will also be an additional weekend round-up in Sports Weekend, which will air every Saturday at 18:30, as well as a one-off special of l’Afrique en Direct, 鶹Լ Afrique’s live interactive show, which will come live from Johannesburg.

For Arabic-speaking audiences across the Middle East and beyond, 鶹Լ Arabic’s multi-platform coverage of the World Cup incorporates TV, radio and online. 鶹Լ Arabic’s Sherif El-Sherif, a well known sports reporter, commentator and football expert, will be hosting a new multimedia show, featuring reports and discussions on all the action and behind-the-scenes stories. Audiences will be able to follow Sherif’s daily experiences in South Africa via a special Twitter feed.

鶹Լ Brasil will have reporter Daniel Gallas following the fortunes of the Brazilian team during the tournament, while Maria Luisa Cavalcanti will be examining the World Cup 2010’s infrastructure and focusing on what the Brazilian organisation for the 2014 tournament could learn from South Africa. The programmes will focus on the cultural, social and economic impact of the tournament on South Africa, giving audiences a broad perspective on the competition. 鶹Լ Persian will examine themes such as the music of South Africa, the impact of technology on the tournament and the wider implications for business and tourism in the region. 鶹Լ Persian journalists will also analyse related issues such as security, health and poverty.
