Animal Action

Animal welfare and in particular the care of animals in need is a subject that seems to touch people. Every month we showcase one animal and the possibility of adoption or long-term re-homing.

Looking for a new pet?Μύ There is no better place to look for one than the many animal sanctuaries or rescue centres throughout the county.Μύ From hedgehogs to horses, there is an animal that needs your support.Μύ This month we are featuring Chrissie's Owls.

CAN YOU SUPPORT THEM?

Misty

Misty - Barn Owl

Misty came to us four years ago after being found by a lady out walking her dog, Misty, named by us, was floating on the edge of a lake and had been attacked by crows, she was very thin and had considerable feather damage, her face was matted with dirt as she had been trying to find worms to eat.It was obvious that she had been dumped by her owner who no longer wanted her and she would not have survived for much longer if she had not been bought to us. She is a very contented owl and loves human company and will stay with us for the rest of her life, she is now twelve years old. We tried to trace her owner but had no luck at all.Misty the Barn Owl

Winston

Winston the Little Owl

Winston was found by the road side by a young girl who took him to the vet in Cogges, they contacted me and I collected him and took him home to care for him.He had been scalped by crows and was in a bad way and so tiny he had to be hand reared, although our policy is to returned wild owls to the wild Winston became very tame and could not be released so we had him microchipped and applied for paperwork for him and he has a home for life. He is happy to be with people and thinks that I am his mum.

Chrissie Harper

Chrissie’s Owls

A small family run concern with a genuine love of owls.Μύ With the help of our daughter and family plus some very committed volunteers we attend craft and country shows throughout the year to help raise funds for our rescue work.

I have been working with birds of prey for twelve years but admit that owls are my passion and in 2003 me and Tom decided to work together and started Chrissie’s Owls.

Harris Hawk

We have a varied collection of owls most of them hand reared by ourselves although we have kept a few of the many captive bred owls we have rescued over the years, they are all happy to come out with us and help usΜύ promote the conservation of our native species of owl, we believe that by educating people of all ages about owls we can make a small contribution to their survival in the wild.

When we started five years ago we were not sure how things would go but we have been very surprised at the interest and support we have received from people.Μύ The pleasure our owls give to young and old alike is amazing, owls are wonderful creatures and we are totally committed to helping them all we can.

We supply nest boxes for wild owls and Kestrels and are always happy to give advice to anyone who wants to help our native species of owl, we are very much into conservation and feel that school visits are very important as children are the future of these wonderful creatures. All of our native owl species are in decline and we hope by educating people and making them aware of the problems facing owls in the wild we can do something to help boost the wild population.

We provide a twenty-four hour rescue service and never refuse to help an injured owl within reason.Μύ We have made a lifetime commitment to our owls and it is a twenty-four seven, three hundred and sixty-five days of the year job.
