Jo and Gavin Hageman

Wildlife Detectives

Afternoon Presenter Jo Thoenes and wildlife expert Gavin Hageman have been looking around some of Oxfordshire's nature reserves to see if there is more than meets the eye in the wild of our county...

BBOWT

The Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust is one of 47 Wildlife Trusts across the UK working to achieve the shared aim of securing a better future for wildlife. The Trust manages 88 nature reserves across the three counties as well as working with other agencies on safeguarding the wider countryside. Find out more at www.bbowt.org.uk

There are 47 local Wildlife Trusts across the whole of the UK, the Isle of Man and Alderney. We are working for an environment rich in wildlife for everyone. With 726,000 members, we are the largest UK voluntary organisation dedicated to conserving the full range of the UK's habitats and species, whether they be in the countryside, in cities or at sea. 135,000 of our members belong to our junior branch, Wildlife Watch.Μύ

We manage 2,200 nature reserves covering more than 80,000 hectares; we stand up for wildlife; we inspire people about the natural world and we foster sustainable living.

Our expert - Gavin Hageman

"I have worked at BBOWT for 10 years now, mostly as a Reserves Officer on our 88 nature reserves. I love the wild places I get to see and cannot imagine ever giving up working with wildlife.

"After a meandering career as a chef, analytical chemist and photographic printer, I was finally lured to nature conservation in 1992. I sold my house and became an ecology student at Oxford Brookes University. Volunteering at the Devon Wildlife Trust then helped me to get my 'foot in the door' of nature conservation. Now I work part-time in BBOWT's marketing departmentΜύ sharing my knowledge of wildlife through various media including, radio, TV, magazines and papers. The rest of the time I work on the restoration of BBOWT's floodplain marsh on the Oxon/Bucks border.

"My passions, in addition to my wife Alison and boys Finlay (5) and Luke (3), are cooking, photography, and SCUBA diving."
