For the past few years I’ve been self-employed, earning a living doing everything from contributing to Ouch!, to writing a play and performing comedy all over the world. Being my own boss has been fun - my work has been varied, the hours have been irregular and each day has been unpredictable. So why have I just traded all of this in for the ‘nine to five’?

I have a new job - a proper, full time, office job. I work from 9.30 am – 6 pm every weekday except Friday when we can leave at 5 pm. There’s an hour for lunch and 25 days holiday per year. I know this may be normal for most people but as someone who is used to going to bed at 3 am, getting up at lunchtime and working most evenings, the new routine has come as a shock to my crippled little system.

At night, exhausted by the long days sat in front of a computer, I’ve been hitting the sack at half past ten. The last time I went to bed this early, I was 8 years old. Mornings aren’t much better; since starting work, I’ve had to set my alarm for times that I previously never knew existed - six am? Six thirty? What?

Two weeks into the new job though and I am already creating coping strategies. I’ve learnt that if instead of 'six forty five', I say 'quarter to seven', then psychologically it doesn’t sound quite as early. I go to bed in my clothes to save time in the morning and if I am ever late for work then my favourite excuse is, "my hamster ate my wheelchair".

But getting used to a new routine is the easy part. The difficult bit is learning how to fit in with colleagues, the company and your new role.

I’m not sure how many of the teething problems I experienced when starting a new job are due to being a crip and how many are just an inherent part of being new. For example, whilst I’m normally a fairly assertive, chatty and witty person, as the new girl I’m rather quiet and shy. The team I work with head to the pub every lunchtime whilst I stay at my desk with a packed lunch. To date, they’ve not invited me to join them.

Is this a disability thing? Is the pub inaccessible? Is it because I’m a woman or older or perhaps it’s just that I’m not yet part of the gang? Maybe I should just make the first move and invite myself.

I have had office jobs in the past but they’ve always been in disability organisations where there’s inevitably some degree of mutual understanding, humour and camaraderie. In my new workplace, however, I’m the only wheelchair user – in fact I’m pretty sure I’m 'the only cripple in the office’. This means there’s no 'in’ jokes about Disability Living Allowance, no shared experiences about people asking 'what’s wrong with you?’ and no casually calling each other 'crips’. Instead, as the lone crip, it's become my unofficial job to train everyone in disability issues - and I’m delighted to say that my presence already appears to be having an impact.

The accessible toilet which used to be the company changing / private poo room is now more often than not displaying that little green ‘vacant’ symbol on the door. Result!

I’m sure it’ll take me a while to acclimatise to working with non-disabled people and it looks like it might take them a while to get used to working with me. Last week, my boss used the phrase 'I’ll walk you through this’ and when I made a joke about him flaunting his fully functioning legs in front of me, he was clearly mortified. First he became confused, next he apologised and then he told me that he has a disabled relative.

Since I have full time personal assistance, there is always a helper like person with me at work. But my colleagues seem to be coping well with this unusual relationship. After a couple of false starts, they even came to understand that when it’s my turn to make the tea, it’ll be my PA who’ll make it for the team. It’s only a matter of time before she gets invited to the pub at lunchtime.

Not only has the office been invaded by a wheelie with an entourage but in the coming weeks we’ll also be joined by a whole host of disability gadgetry. As soon as I got the job, I contacted the Government scheme Access to Work for help in making my workplace even more accessible. Before I could say, 'ugly looking equipment with an over-inflated special price tag’, an assessor had been out. She measured me, photographed me and promptly ordered a height adjustable desk, a made to measure office chair and an electric stapler. I shall be the envy of the office.

Speaking of staplers, the job has even more perks, my particular favourite being stationery.

I live for my daily rummages amongst the fluorescent post-it’s, envelopes with windows and box files. I can’t help but help myself.

So, with my personal assistant as my accomplice, I rifle through the stationery cupboard, and every evening we leave the office with an oversized bag of booty.

Surely no one would ever suspect a frail little cripple like me, with her extra large bag of medical aids and continence products. Or would they?

      There was me thinking I was the only person who (sometimes) gets dressed for bed to save time in the morning. There's a confession!

      Luckily I only work out of the house for 2 days a week at the moment and as an arthritic wobbler, I can get things organised and out of the door in under half an hour.
      I have worked full - time in the past, before arthritis really struck - the earliest rising time ever on a regular basis was 5.30. Yerch...

      My disability was acquired whilst working for the organisation, and since it happened I have stopped being invited out to lunch. So unfortunately, it may well be a disabled thing why your colleagues arent inviting you. Not necessarily though, maybe they are just unsure and need encouragement that you are as cool as we all know you are.

      My routine is such that I dont go to bed in my clothes but I do get them ready and leave them very close to the bed. I also set my alarm an hour earlier than needed, wake up, take my medication and several buckets of pain relief and then sleep again. By the time I have to actually get up, my meds have kicked in enough for dressing to be possible.

      I dont have a PA, dont need one at work but at home my husband cares for me and makes me brekkie and helps me dress. He also ferries me door to door from home to work and vice versa which is super handy and makes the trip less arduous.

      I have regular breaks from my PC and take longer for lunch than most because I need the rest.

      Best of luck, have fun with the stationary. I work for the NHS so we are very tight on stationary and if I want anything fun like colourful post its and sparkly note pads I buy my own. Im too good see..

      Fabulous! As usual I nearly became disconnected from my tubes laughing - crip entertainment at its best. I must remember the "My hamster ate my wheelchair" joke.. I used to use the one about the dodgy lift playing up but after so many times people realise that you are pulling a fast one.. Who moi? Never!

      my last office job was back in the 70's things were very different then. One boss I had thought it highly amusing to knock on the toilet door and rattle the handle. I am a wheelchair user and we didnt have PAs then so had to rely on fellow colleagues.
