Up for the Cup!

The last time York City Football Club played at Wembley Stadium was in 1993 when they beat Crewe Alexandra in the play-offs to gain promotion to Division Two. 16 years later, on 9 May 2009, they will be hoping for Cup glory in the FA Trophy Final.

Much has changed since 1993 when York City last played at Wembley. For a start there is a brand new national stadium and, for the FA Trophy Final, a brand new pitch!

Complaints about the playing surface from Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger, amongst others, prompted the authorities to rip up the existing surface and re-lay the pitch with turf from a different nursery.

The FA Trophy Final will be the very first match played on the new pitch, which will surely be hallowed turf forever to York fans if their team picks up the Cup!

When the team last ran out at Wembley back in 1993, Graham Taylor was in the last stages of his tenure as England manager and Ace of Base topped the UK charts with 'All That She Wants'.

Although time has moved on since then, one thing remains constant... the fans' enthusiasm for the Minstermen and their eagerness for a day out at Wembley.

About 10,000 fans travelled to London in 1993 and at least 12,000 are expected to make the journey this time to watch their team take on Stevenage for the FA Trophy.

For any supporters who can't make the journey, for whatever reason, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio York will be broadcasting live coverage of the whole day as it unfolds.

The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ bus will be at Wembley and Adam Tomlinson will be presenting a show from there between 10am and 1pm. The programme will include live inserts from Russell Walker and Anna Wallace as they join one of the 17 official fans' coaches for the trip.

And from 1pm Sharon Shortle and the sports team pick up the baton with the build-up to the match and then full commentary from Al Ross and his summariser, Chris Jones. Barry Parker will be the pitchside reporter. You can follow all the action both on the radio and online.
