Callum at Filey School on Red Nose Day

Callum gets in the Red Nose mood!

Red Nose fun in Filey!

Filey School's Red Nose Day event was a great success and raised 'loadsamoney' for Comic Relief. One of their Â鶹ԼÅÄ News School reporters, Callum, tells us what went on in a day packed full of fundraising activities.

The day started out quite dull with lessons happening as normal. The only strange thing was not wearing uniform, as it is a rare thing within the school. During period 1 some teaching groups including 8.1 went out to do the Mount Kilimanjaro activity, which was a sponsored event.

The idea was that every student in year 8 went up the steps to the top yard, along the top, down the other steps and along the bottom 10 times. This was worked out at a total distance of 32 metres and 128.866 recurring (how precise do you need to be?)!

Once every member of year 8 had completed this activity, according to our maths teacher, Mr Glover, it meant they had covered the same total distance as the celebrities who climbed Mount Kilimanjaro for Comic Relief.

Tug of war at Filey School

A tug of war team takes the strain!

The main event of the day in my eyes was the tug of war with teams of 10 taking part. It was definitely a successful event, even though my tutor group’s team lost! The funniest event that deserves a mention, especially as it is for Comic Relief, was at the end of the last year 7 tug of war heat. Although it was a success the ICT teacher, Mr Drumm, fell over!

The team from Year 8 most deserving of a mention is 8Sat’s team. Although they lost two out of three tugs, they persevered and had the best victory, in my opinion, with the team captain Liam cheering them on. His nickname, Lazy Liam, seems appropriate as he didn’t actually take part in the tug!

The key person in the team was in fact Alex who, in the final round, defended the team when he wouldn’t let the other team move at all. The two most courageous members were Charlie and Hannah who, although they aren’t particularly strong, tried their best and didn’t give in. The funniest one was the teachers' tug in which a group ofÌý Year 11’s joined to give one team an unfair advantage.

Other events in school were a Welly boot toss, a Red Nose quiz, a chance to guess how many red balloons were inside Miss Edgar's car and, an interesting one this, the chance for students to see how some of the teachers looked as babies - and to try and identify them from their baby photos!

After all the events had finished, the money was collected and counted under the supervision of the school's Finance Manager. It reached a grand total of £1200 with even more to come in from the sponsorship of the Mount Kilimanjaro event. A great Red Nose Day result for Filey School!
