This October sees the annual Campaign for Drawing鈥檚 initiative to get people of all ages and abilities across the country drawing. 鈥楾he Big Draw鈥� will take place throughout the month with venues hosting events based on a chosen theme and within an inspirational environment.

鈥淚f you can draw, even a little bit, you can express all kinds of ideas that might otherwise be lost - delights, frustrations, whatever torments you or pleases you鈥� says Hockney.

Window Shopping

Shop windows and displays in York are the theme of a series of workshops being organised by the Council's Arts and Culture department.

On Saturday October 6th they'll be holding a workshop between 10am and 4pm at the Design Outlet, near Naburn.

The following Saturday - 13th October - they'll be on Parliament Street in York between 10am and 4pm.

York Theatre Royal is the venue for the workshop on Saturday October 20th. Again this will run between 10am and 4pm.

The final workshop will be on Saturday October 27th at the Merchant Adventurers Hall on Picadilly. This will take place between 10am and 3pm.

Vanessa Langford, from Arts Action York, hopes this theme for The Big Draw "will allow people of all ages and abilities to get involved. They can draw local shops or use archive photographs as reference material. Children might be inspired to design shop windows of the future. The Big Draw allows everyone to set their imagination free to explore, create, learn and develop".

As well as these workshops, a professional artist will be working with Community Base, a group of adults with learning difficulties, to create a piece of art that will be displayed at the Hungate site. This will be exhibited from October 19th as part of 'Sitelines' - an outdoor exhibition of the hoardings surrounding the site.

Sketching and Etching

The Yorkshire Museum, York Art Gallery and York Castle Museum will be encouraging inventive thinkers to help design the museum of tomorrow, and contribute their work to a huge collective collage between the 20th and 22nd of October.

York Minster will provide a menagerie of inspiration for budding artists, welcoming participants for the 鈥楪reat East Window Draw鈥� between the 22 and 26 of October. Be inspired by the beautiful stained glass windows, architecture and decor of one of the county鈥檚 most impressive buildings.

Scarborough Art Gallery will be hosting a drop-in session for aspiring artists on October 13th. Geologist Ann Ainsworth and artist Tracy Himsworth will be encouraging participants to take their pencil on a journey along the coast from St Ives to Scarborough.

Inspired by the Gallery's current exhibition 'Sportlight on St Ives', it will be a chance to find out more about the Geology of our coastline whilst helping to create a giant drawing. The session, between 2 and 4pm, is suitable for families with children aged from six months. (The event is free on admission to the Gallery. Adult admission is 拢1, free for children 16 and under).

Going Gargoyle

Helmsely Archaeology Store will become a fury of creative force as visitors can contribute to a huge collage drawing inspired by the store鈥檚 fantastic archaeological artifacts, including some unique carved grotesque faces! Visitors will also be able to talk to the curators and gain a behind-the-scenes look into the store.

Adults can enjoy a beginners' class in monoprinting at the Craven Museum and Gallery in Skipton at an evening workshop with artist David Thomas on the 4th October, while children can have plenty of fun adding their own artwork to existing creations at the Family Art Day on October 6th.

With most of the events being free to enter, with lots of expert advice and unique sources of inspiration available, The Big Draw promises to be a fun-filled affair for all the family, and with over 1000 events across the country there is plenty of opportunity to take part this year.
