Steam train at Pickering station
All aboard!

All steamed up!

Good Friday 2007 will be the day of an historic rail journey on the North York Moors Railway. Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio York will be there to bring you all the sights, sounds and smells of the day. Read on to find out what's going on...

For the first time in 40 years, passengers of North Yorkshire Moors Railway will be able to travel by steam from Pickering to Whitby!

Until now the NYMR trains had to stop at Grosmont - just a handful of miles from the coast and change onto a regularΜύmodern railway carriage - but now it's all aboard for the coast!

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio York listeners have the unique chance to fill one of the four carriages on the very first train making the historic journey. The train will leave Pickering at 8.45am on Good Friday morning.

Make sure you listen to Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio York from Monday 2nd April for your chance to win tickets to secure your place on this unique event in history.

A steam train on the beautiful NYMR.

The travellers will have four hours to entertain themselves in the lovely coastal town - it's very likely they'll take the chance to enjoy a lunch of fish and chips, after all, many top chefs, including James Martin and Rick Stein have declared Whitby to be the home of the best in Britain!

They might decide to climb the 199 steps to the cliff top to visit the abbey ruins and see the spot where Bram Stoker got his inspiration for Dracula.

They could possibly take a walk around the harbour and appreciate the town's historical past which stretches back thousands of years.

Their steam return journey will stop at the historic and beautiful stations of Levisham, Goathland and Grosmont.

Steam train in Whitby
Full steam ahead to Whitby.

If they're really lucky they could spot the odd television programme or movie being filmed, as this line is depicted in ITV's Heartbeat and was given iconic status by young fans of Harry Potter, who spied this location in his first film!

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio York will be broadcasting live on the day too - with presenter Adam Tomlinson based at Pickering platform and sidekick Dougie Weake on board the train.

The pair will bring the steam, soot and sound of the historic run on the air from 8.45am 'til 12noon.

So even if you aren't lucky enough to be on that first train to Whitby, you are still very welcome to join Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Radio York at Pickering and soak up the atmosphere or stay tuned to the radio and enjoy the goings on from the comfort of your armchair.
