Drowning by Stephanie Conn

I step into the little boat,

encouraged by the peels of laughter -

and after all, such a perfect setting.

I feel the gentle warmth on my skin

that fails to warm the cold truth

and I row with all my strength.

But I am weak and fail to get far,

so I stop and drift and watch -

the mother and the child.

I am neither, no prospect of either,

I capsize and drown.
