Seeds
Book Review Richard Wright
9 August 2002

SeedsDescribed as the ultimate guide to growing successfully from seed, this specialist book is invaluable for both the first time grower and experienced gardener. The author, herself the owner of a successful herb farm, writes with enthusiasm about the magical satisfaction of watching plants grow from seed to maturity. A good idea however might be to read the last chapter first, since it offers sound practical information on different types of seeds, how they are pollinated and harvested and the correct growing conditions and equipment to get started.

The rest of the book gives specific information on the growing of over 500 species of plants, with a simple step-by-step planting guide for each. There is an alphabetical reference for different groups of plants, illustrated with inspiring photography. Alpines and rock plants are covered in detail, with tips such a the refrigeration of certain seeds to aid germination. Common problems are addressed, along with clear and practical instructions to solve them. Organic practices are encouraged, and tried and tested techniques to ensure success are highlighted.

A wide variety of annuals and biennials are described, with advice on sowing and transplanting seedlings. There are chapters on propagating more unusual plants such as cacti and succulents, palms and cycads, and herbs – the author’s own speciality. The book also covers aquatic plants, climbers, ferns, grasses, perennials, shrubs, trees and vegetables. So there is something for every gardener, whether they want to create plants for a garden pond or to camouflage a wall. Even included is a list of reliable seed stockists. This is a good value comprehensive guide, useful for anyone wanting the satisfaction of watching their own seedlings appear and produce successful results.
