Paul’s memories of Warrenpoint in Christmas, 1939, highlight the surreal set of circumstances the Second World War had visited upon this corner of Ireland. While the town had regular blackouts as a precaution against German air raids, nearby Omeath (a mere two miles away) carried on with life as normal as it lay across the border in the Irish Republic which retained a neutral position throughout WWII.
