There is, without a doubt, a clique among the Belfast music scene. It's certainly not a negative concept - a collective of bands who work together, share knowledge, contacts and amps and support each other as much as possible - it can only lead to great things. The incredible 'A Little Solidarity' gig being a good example.

The three bands performing tonight are all on the periphery. But they're referencing each other onstage, giving props and plugs. If this is a mini-scene forming, it's about time we all got involved.

Pocket Promise shamelessly homed in on epic balladry a long time ago and have done nothing but soar in recent times. Cormac Fee has just about the strongest voice you'll hear in this city, somewhere between Matt Bellamy and Tom Smith. Decent musicianship onstage and those rolling basslines really help. It works. 'Facing Down' is still the standout track, though new single 'I Burnt the Roller Disco' proves they can pack a little punch, when they need to.

Despite irritating this reviewer to the point of extreme rantage, Skruff are, as always, magnificent. A selection of new tracks are all nice and squelchy, while Conor McGowan is as confidant and assured as ever. It bodes well. However, why not play either of your two biggest songs? 'Subliminilia' and 'Set It All On Fire' are pop gems guaranteed to make the average punter fall in love. Makes no sense to leave your best weaponry at home.

Sparks Fly seem in great form, launching their cracking single 'Creatures', during which, they make a decent claim for believable comparisons to QOTSA. Poppier moments remind us of the Kinks and 'For the Record' has a ludicrous hook that will stick with us on the journey home.

The only problem is that some tracks are a little flabby, slightly dragging and in need of a sneaky edit. As a result, the wonderful (and crucially, quite trim) 'Save Some for Me' is the stand out.

Sparks flying for the time being, but igniting soon, for sure.
