Retrospective Exhibition by Roger Corfe

View this major exhibition in oils and watercolours, primarily of landscapes and village scenes, by a prodigious local artist.

Opening times until Sunday, 27th January 2008:

Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm.
Sunday from 2pm to 5pm.

Location:

Northampton Museum and Art Gallery,
Guildhall Road,
Northampton,
NN1 1DP.

Roger Corfe died just over three years ago (1912-2004), and this exhibition takes a journey through places that appealed to him the most over eight decades.

Early works include fascinating small etchings and pre-war paintings, and later we see Northamptonshire villages and countryside as well as many other parts of Britain. Further afield, there are records of his visits abroad including France and Italy.Μύ

Then we are drawn back to his home and studio at Holcot and glimpses of his immediate surroundings.ΜύRoger's constant return to the wildlife reserve at Pitsford Water and his continued study of water and light there is astonishing.Μύ

Clouds, impending rain and reflections, or overgrown grasses, sunlit trees and dark shadows fascinated him.ΜύHe had a particular ability to convey the atmosphere of landscape with enormous dexterity in both oil and watercolour.

Born in 1912, Roger Corfe studied at Heatherley's School of Art in Chelsea before qualifying as a dental surgeon at Guys Hospital.ΜύHe spent WW2 in the Royal Army Dental Corps and returned to settle and practice in Northamptonshire.Μύ

A quiet, modest man, Roger Corfe found his inspiration in the beauty of the landscape, which he clearly enjoyed sharing with us in his paintings.

The exhibition

The exhibition comprises more than 200 paintings, sketchbooks and etchings, and is selling well if the number of red dots are anything to go by.ΜύThere is also a delightful colour monograph about the artist's work and life to accompany the show.

The exhibition is open and FREE to the public until Sunday, 27th January 2008.
