Hunter

By Kyle Prati, 12, from Corby.

Kieran sprinted across the fine, damp walkway of moss that was draped across the cliff top, panting and wheezing as he went. He turned a sharply and headed towards the lowlands never looking back and running for his life. A small shape whizzed past his ear, alerting him to the trap he was running into, he then turned around and sprinted faster towards the cliff edge, this time swerving and using each utilizable piece of terrain as cover. Eventually Kieran reached the cliff edge, it was a long drop but into mossy water so it could be survived.

He turned to see his assailant as a piece of shot crackled past his head, these were deliberate misses, like warning shots. The heartless assassin was a large black clad figure, wearing a long, black, felt overcoat and a pair of black trousers. Under the grim overcoat was a shirt of armour that was the colour of a lightless pit itself, screaming with the cries of one thousand dead souls. It's face was covered by a mask that froze Kieran's eyes in place, made his heart skip a beat and the hair on the back of his neck twitch with discomfort.

His shadowy assailant seemed to flicker in and out of the physical world, breathing huskily and looking through him. The stalker broke into a fast run, then got faster and faster, while he ran his limbs moved in unison, it was as smooth as a wheel rolling but this fact only made him faster, ravenously sprinting then followed but then Kieran saw how it moved up close. The attacker moved in a way that was impossible to human nature, it was something about the angles and proportions of his body, and seemed to constantly dislocate it's arms and legs. Kieran turned towards the cliff edge, it was too steep to climb down and all his hopes rested on one move. The silent, black aggressor leaped in front of Kieran and didn't stop running, Kieran dodged to the side in the hopes of killing the assassin with a long fall but it stopped with its arms wide at the very edge, pushing Kieran into the water below.

Kieran struggled against the choking water, he hoped the attacker couldn't get here but at the same time he knew it could. He eventually waded his way to the bank of the small lake and then broke into a steady run, still weary from his last encounter, and dodged into a clump of tall trees, these would give him enough cover for now. He kept running and constantly looked in all directions and once tore his shirt on a spiked fern, this must have gave his attacker a clue where he was as it managed to catch up. The pair darted through the forest, the aggressor slightly faster and more agile but Kieran was beating it. Eventually it was out of sight behind him but he kept running.

He looked back again and this time saw it, although it was far behind it was raising its gun, aiming and then, fired. Kieran dodged to the side just in time, the bullet sailed past and hit a tree about ten yards away. He flung himself to the left around a corner and came face to face with his assailant, he felt a searing pain in his chest, he looked down and saw the handle of a large, jewelled, serrated knife protruding from his stomach. He took his last breath and fell to the ground, dying horribly. The stalker began to walk away but then turned back. Whispering in Kieran's ear, "I am your" he paused "HUNTER", and for a brief moment it placed it's hand on his heart, only to grab the corpse and carry it away, as if it were just an accessory.
