Vulpine Breakfast

By Francesca Bass from West Haddon.

A ewe gives birth
With hind leg braced.
Head back straining.
Two foxes watch with avid eyes.
Tongues moistening.

As lamb is dropped his wet head shakes.
Surprised blinking.
The dog-fox waits
with whiffing snout.
Saliva dribbling.

The mother is tender with rough tongue washes.

Now vixen yearns
with twitchy brush.Ìý
Stomach craving.

Once more sheepÌýlabours with both eyes closed.
Hurtful pushing.
SoÌýsly bootsÌýambush
first lamb alone.Ìý
Chase thrilling.

When shocked gimmer leaps her new lamb spills.
Lonely squirming.
Then vermin rush
To tear and shake.
Rampant pulling.

With outrage she charges in headlong bash.
Madly grunting.
Fox thugs quit
with jaws both full.
Triumphant dragging.

As sad ewe frets she licks stained ground.
Newborns missing.
Two vulpines gorge
OnÌý lambkin flesh.
Muzzles staining.
