Jub-Bah

By Leon Martindale from Northampton.

Everybody has lines on their forehead, ranging from very light to deeply ploughed furrows. Jub-Bah's lines were really quite different; they were so deep his head resembled an Armadillo. The lines started at his eyebrows and they kept going right through his greasy, receding hairline to the very top of his greenish grey head.

Standing almost four feet eleven inches in his flappy unshod feet, Jub-Bah's head was just a little higher than the light switch, which enabled him to switch on the light with his malleable nose if he cared to. This thought brought a smile to his round face as his nose was stranger than most, he could change the shape, colour and even the supple texture as the mood took him.ÌýHe often changed it into the shape of an elephant's trunk; it was strong too, like a python.

He enjoyed showing his minions how strong it really was by gripping them around the neck and choking them with his nose while he clapped happily with his chubby little hands.

Jub-Bah's Cook had no neck; his head was joined directly to his upper body. Standing about six and a half feet high he looked an impressive figure with his long dark hair worn in tight braids that tumbled over his head and down to his shoulders, almost hiding his whole head but a small gap was left for his bright green eyes. The cook had spent a long, long time training his hair to grow that way as it made it quite difficult for Jub-Bah to get at his neck, although on close inspection the scars of many past encounters could clearly be seen.

The Cook was well used to arguments and fights with his master, as Jub-Bah hated salad and green vegetables and of course the cook served him with huge amounts of green stuff (it's good for you, sir).ÌýJub-Bah's reaction was quite predictable, he would throw things all over the room and rant and shout and stamp his feet and throw punches, until the cook made his master very happy by bringing him a small square box made from carved strips of bone

Inside the box a pair of bright black eyes and a twitchy be-whiskered nose explored every corner of its prison.

Jub-Bah was thought to be amongst the oddest of all demons, keeping a cook. And although he didn't have to, he loved to eat and ate regularly in his own realm; his favourite food was live rats!

Rats of different colours, different sizes, shapes and ages, it didn't matter as long as they had tails.ÌýThe tails were his favourite part and he always started at the very tip. Jub-Bah had his own way of eating rats, perfected over many millennium and untold thousands of rats.

After carefully removing it from the bone box he held the little furry animal around its head with a special shape he had devised with his nose. He then swung the rat to and fro until it squeaked shrilly in fear; he would grab the rat's legs, front paws in his left hand, back ones in his right; holding it like a corn on the cob, Jub-Bah would snap at the thrashing pink tail, laughing and giggling to himself until he deftly caught the very tip and began to nibble. The rat's tail would be reduced to a bloody stump in seconds, and Jub-Bah's sharp, disgustingly yellow stained teeth would be covered with blood and bits of gristle.

Next, with the rat still shaking with fear and pain, Jub-Bah would start crunching along the backbone from the base of the tail to the head; within two bites the rat would be dead and he would be crunching up the rat's backbone until he reached its head which he enjoyed munching noisily. Having opened up the little body along the back he would begin to suck out the red sloppy insides.ÌýStarting at the head opening, he would suck out the lungs and various organs as he moved along the small body until he reached the stomach and bowels where he would suck with glee until all that was left would be an empty skin.ÌýOne big bite right in the middle would leave him with the two ends, feet attached, which he would pop into his mouth and finish off his snack.

The Demon was very happy with his snack and the Cook was happy he was happy, his minions were happy that he was happy.ÌýBut tomorrow would be a whole different story........ they had run out of rats.
