Victim of circumstance

By Nigel Maycock from Market Harborough in Rutland (working in Corby).

It was War.
As the ashen glow
From a single torch failed to illuminate the horror.
It's unnerving depravity was unseen
By the boy stood with cigarette smouldering between chapped lips.
He feels no cold as the winds sweep and cut into his flesh
But in that moment he shivers anyway.

It was War.
As the stench from putrid bodies
Lay on the icy floors of yesterday
To remind him of friends he'd lost.
Their brown khaki uniforms bludgeoned
In the remnants of the historical battle-cry
For a King's shilling and the fight for victory.

It was War.
As the orders came to rise and fight
Against unseen foes as scared as he.
The orders came to kill
Any who dared to stand for what is right.
The order came for bayonets fixed
And charge.

It was War.
As the sun on that cold October morning sent shivers of trepidation
Along his aching spine, but he felt no pain as he climbed the hill.

It was War.
As the sun on that cold November morning sent a tremble of fear
Through his gut, but again he felt no pain as he climbed the hill.

It was War.
As the sun on that cold December morning seemed to refresh his soul
So with confidence he climbed the hill.

But this time, he felt the pain as his life slipped so easily away.
