Candle

By Pat Roffey from Corby.

I never used to think about candles
Except in the power cuts
I've got enough of them for
Power cuts for the next three winters

This candle's different
It's in a glass - Like a night light
For a child who's afraid of the dark
Light a candle to humanity
Though it's hard when they all laugh back at you

I wasn't afraid of the dark
My sister was afraid of the dark
I put up with her infuriating candle
There was always a moth coming round it

Muriel bought me the candle
"Scrape out the candle and use it as a sherry glass"
"I'd think of tasting candle grease"
I like to see it as a candle

There's not much left - They ARE laughing back
I have my man, my animals
I'm conflicted - I'm restless
Its me against the world
Because its the WORLD against ME

Now I look at it
On its round disc of wood
It's a gift brought back from Muriel's holiday

For me, it represents lost love
It represents lost friends
Now I NEED a candle
