Attleborough

Attleborough is situated on the main A11, midway between Thetford and Norwich. The market town was listed in the 1086 survey of the Doomsday Book, although the settlement's history can be traced back to Saxon times. Sadly, much of the old town was destroyed by fire in 1559.

A market was established in 1226 and is still held every Thursday. The idyllic Queen's Square was named after Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, an event recorded on the pump on the green.

The traditional industry of turkey-rearing still takes place in Attleborough. The town sign has a turkey on it, reputed to refer back to earlier times when turkeys were walked to London rather than taken by cart and train.

The town is now home to more than 11,000 people. Many residents take time out in The Queen's Square which was acquired and refurbished by Attleborough Town Council in 1998.
