Panto is very easy to get wrong, and one of the hardest things to get right.

The show this year includes all the elements you'd want: a script telling a recognisable fairy story which speaks directly to the most important people in the audience - the children - with plenty of gags, songs and dances performed by local youngsters, and all in bright and colourful costumes.

Snow White And The Seven Dwarves hasn't often been seen, maybe because of the shortage of small people to play the dwarves.

However, Sheringham have got around this cleverly by using children inside the costumes - complete replicas of the Disney dwarves - who perform to pre-recorded adult voices. Sounds distinctly odd, but believe me, it works.

In a strong cast, three are outstanding: Paul Tate in a myriad of costumes, each one more outrageous than the last, as Nurse Nanny Annie Fanny; Thom Price as Tommy The Tinkerer, who establishes a real rapport with the children, and Claire Fisher as the Wicked Queen.

She strikes a good balance between being totally horrid and quite likeable.

Oh, and there's a very cool West Indian mirror, which raps. The children love it.

It seems as if Sheringham knows its audience very well.Μύ

There's enough room in the script to allude to supermarket wars - an issue that's been consuming the town of late - and to the recent (in my view, PC gone mad) fears that any sweets thrown might hurt someone.Μύ

This is a thoroughly entertaining pantomime, tightly directed by Richard Mullins, and I'm only sorry that I was unavoidably delayed in getting to Sheringham and missed the first half hour.

But any good humour lost on the road was quickly restored by a truly heart-warming show.
