Around The World In 80 Dishes

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Voices has been taking a culinary trip around the world. People from King's Lynn were filmed cooking a favourite dish from their home country and as part of the West Norfolk Food Fortnight 2007.

Food Fortnight Facts

  • The Food Fortnight demonstrates the link between food and health, and enables us to learn about a wide variety of other subjects such as history, science, art and culture.
  • In addition, the event provides an opportunity to celebrate diversity and to promote the area for its renowned restaurants, food production, agriculture and fishing industry.
  • Food Fortnight is now in its fourth year and although it has received national recognition as a learning festival, at its heart it remains a local, community event.
  • The last Food Fortnight in 2005 involved more than 90 local organisations and at least 4000 people took part in one or more of the many activities on offer across West Norfolk.

Traditional food is always popular. Every country has their favourites and now many of those dishes compete for our tastebuds alongside our own very British fish and chips.

However, you don't have to go to restaurants and takeaways to sample what's on offer. Many are easy to make at home.

This is the inspiration behind Around The World In 80 Dishes on Sunday, 28 October, an event where food from more than 80 countries, representing every continent, is on offer for people to try.

The event is part of the West Norfolk Food Fortnight, which runs from 27 October to 10 November, 2007.

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Voices, the story-telling and media training centre from the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ in Norwich, felt the chance of showing how some of those dishes were made was too good to miss.

The Voices team have been working with the West Norfolk Partnership to film some of these recipes and encourage us all to try a taste of the exotic.

"There are people from so many different countries now living in Norfolk it means we can get to experience different tastes without even having to leave the county," said Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Voices producer Gary Standley.

In the films, the west Norfolk cooks are seen making the meals and treats that they grew up with in their home country.

"At our Around the World In 80 Dishes event we have an amazing array of different foods for people to try," said Gill Daniels,ΜύFood Fortnight project co-ordinator for the West Norfolk Partnership.

"You can try tasters from Syria, Sudan, the Czech Republic, China, Trinidad and Tobago, Australia, India, Italy, Greece… the list goes on.

"Now with the films, it means you can have a go at the recipes yourself at home. Food is a great way of bringing people together, sharing cultures as well as recipes," she added.

The recent Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ series Take On The Takeaway also highlighted the range of foods now on offer in Britain and suggested it is possible to make them ourselves, even if the titles and ingredients seem a little unfamiliar.

Around The World In 80 Dishes takes place on Sunday, 28 October, 2007 at Lynnsport, King's Lynn. The event is free and runs from 1.30 to 4pm. Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Voices will also be there, asking people to tell them about their favourite foods and recipes.
