Catherine Feeny, the singer-songwriter from Los Angeles who took the unorthodox step of relocating to Norwich to further her music career, is to have her work featured in a major new motion picture.

The song Mr Blue, taken from her second album Hurricane Glass, is being used in the feature film Running With Scissors, set for release in the UK on Friday, 2 February, 2007.

Based on Augusten Burroughs' best-selling memoir, the film stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Alec Baldwin, Brian Cox, Joseph Fiennes and recent Golden Globe winner Annette Bening.

With a soundtrack heavily influenced by a collection of '60s and '70s classics, Feeny's track is the only new work to be featured in the film by upcoming director Ryan Murphy.

"When I lived in LA I listened to this morning show hosted by a British fellow called Nic Harcourt," said Catherine.

"I know they sometimes played unsigned artists - so I sent him a few of the songs in the hope he might play them.

"I then got an e-mail from the music supervisor on Running With Scissors saying 'We need your song, contact me immediately'.

"It was all very quick and out of the blue. Just such good luck," she added.

If having your music included in a film wasn't exciting enough, Mr Blue is also being featured in the soundtrack of the latest series of cult teen drama The OC.

"It's strange, something about it seems to hit people immediately. The song is about dealing with this person who's in a mood and it's saying 'You're not seeing things the way they are'," said Catherine.

"I suppose people can just identify with that.

"It's very quick [the Mr Blue track] to the point and has an unusual musical arrangement. Something about those things combine to make it very appealing," she added.

From LA to Norfolk

Catherine moved to Norfolk after meeting ex-Lighthouse Family singer Tunde and his Norfolk-based co-writer Sebastian Rogers at one of her gigs in LA.

She ended up travelling to Norfolk to sing on Tunde's album which was being recorded in the county. Rogers was so enthusiastic about her music, that he became her producer.

Together the pair recorded her second album, Hurricane Glass, at The Mill Studio at Winfarthing, near Diss, where they are now working on her third album.

Catherine continues to jet between Norfolk and California, but is also picking up quite a following in Belgium.

A national radio station recently held a Catherine Feeny day, playing interviews, songs and live recordings of her work.

She describes her music as folk with pop influences and lists Joni Mitchell, Sinead O'Connor and The Cure as her influences, she won an international publishing deal with Warner/Chappell music last year - joining Dido, Led Zeppelin and Moby on the firm's roster.
