TheÌýtour guide welcomed the 34 keen fans, who ranged from teenagers like myself to people who would remember the days of the Â鶹ԼÅÄ Guard.Ìý

The journey started with a short trip over the bridge to the Anchor Hotel - which has an uncertain future.

The Anchor was the home of the first Dad’s Army scene, filmed in the Norvic Room. Some of the cast and crew also used to stay in the Anchor when The Bell was fully booked.

The Polish Club

We then made the short walk to Old Bury Road and the home of the Almshouses - featured in a show called The Face On The Poster. The doorway was used to bring the Polish Club to life.

Our next port of call was Thetford's oldest standing church, which was seen in the The Lion Has Phones, with the street in front of a row of houses also used in the same programme.

The Dad's Army platoon marched past here

Mill Lane was the next stop - seen in what is probably Dad’s Army’s most famous show, The Deadly Attachment.

The platoon could be seen marching down this road followed by the crew of a German U-boat.

Episode descriptions

A brief run-through of the relevant show was relayed to us by our guide at each location, which was very helpful.

Nether Row was the next stop and the most recognised of all the locations - it is Walmington-on-Sea, and played a part in four of the best Dad’s Army episodes.

One of Dad’s Army's regular extras still lives in one of the houses.

We then moved to Guildhall Street and the old cinema, featured in A Soldier’s Farewell, in which the platoon relax to a film after parade.

The cast and crew also used to watch the rushes of scenes filmed in Thetford here.

The tour's last location was Thetford Guildhall which was used in The Captain's Car - and it was a scene which our tour guide could remember watching being filmed when he was nine.

This themed trip around the town was thoroughly enjoyable but it would benefit by being led by one of the Dad's Army actors who could assist Stuart.

Instead of hearing stories secondhand, you could hear them from somebody who was there.

After taking in all the sights, it was a pleasure to sit down with a slice of cake and drink back at the Bell Hotel just like the cast and crew undoubtedly used to at the end of a day's busy filming. It was a perfect way to end a great tour.
