There's some big news for fans of the Eurovision Song Contest.

Next year's competition, which will be entering its 69th year, will be held in the Swiss city of Basel, the event's organiser announced on Friday.

Switzerland became the host country for 2025 after Swiss artist Nemo won this year's contest back in May with their song The Code.

It's tradition for the competition to be held in the winner's nation the following year.

The 2024 final, which was held in Malmö, Sweden, was watched by millions around the world and saw Switzerland beat countries including Croatia, Ukraine and France to claim victory.

Next year's finale will take place on 17 May at the Jakobshalle arena in Basel.

It's a multi-purpose sport and music venue that can hold more than 12,000 fans.

Basel was picked over the Swiss city of Geneva for the 2025 competition. It also beat out the cities of Zurich and Biel.

It's the first time Basel will host the Eurovision Song Contest.

A number of factors were taken into consideration before the final host city was picked including transport links, sustainability, security and each potential city's experience with large scale events.

“The EBU is thrilled that Basel has been selected as the Host City for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025.

"The Contest was born in Switzerland in Lugano back in 1956 and it’s great to be bringing it back to its birthplace almost 70 years later," said Martin Österdahl who is the executive supervisor of the Eurovision Song Contest.

“Basel's strategic location at the crossroads of Europe makes it the ideal setting for an event that celebrates the power of music to connect people across borders.

“With its unique blend of tradition and innovation, Basel reflects the spirit of the Eurovision Song Contest. The city's exceptional St Jakobshalle venue and outstanding hospitality will ensure a memorable experience for delegations, artists and fans alike."
