Northern parts of the UK woke up to strong winds and heavy rain on Friday morning.

The Met Office, which oversees the weather and climate in the UK, has issued a yellow weather warning because of the storm which has been named Lilian.

This means there may be some disruption to travel and possible damage to buildings, and people are encouraged to be a bit more careful when they're out and about.

However, the conditions are expected to calm ahead of the bank holiday itself.

The rain from storm Lilian will die down by Friday afternoon along with the strong winds, and there should be some sunshine.

Saturday will see more rain in some parts of the UK, although much of Wales, north-east England and eastern areas of Northern Ireland should have better weather, with sunshine developing later on in south-west England.

Both Sunday and Monday are expected to experience winds again, with more rain in the north-west and the driest, brightest conditions in the south-east.

However, temperatures will be at or just slightly below the average for the season, and the warm weather will still be felt during any sunny spells.

Despite there being some showers, the majority of people should see lots of dry weather over the bank holiday weekend.

Scotland's August bank holiday fell on the 5 August this year and students in the country have already returned to school.

The cooler weather which we typically see in autumn has already been seen in some parts of the country, with wet and windy weather making an appearance this week.

This weekend will continue to see showers in the north-west of the country, but it won't be raining all the time.

In contrast, eastern Scotland should see lots of dry weather and more sunshine.
