17-year-old storms into Olympic team

A 17-year-old has qualified for the GB athletics team in the 2024 Paris Olympics after an impressive win at the UK Athletics Championships.

It was only last month that Phoebe Gill was noticed on the athletics scene as she clocked the second-fastest time in history for an under-18.

And now, she has won the 800 metre final of the Olympic trials.

Phoebe is currently at sixth form, studying for her A-Levels next year.

But now, it looks like her summer just got a bit more exciting!

Phoebe will be racing in Paris alongside some of her idols in the world of athletics, and can't believe her achievement.

“It’s a whirlwind,” Phoebe said.

“I still feel like I’m in a dream. I can’t think of another way to describe it. It’s just unbelievable that this is happening."

Meanwhile, there was some drama in the men's 800m when Josh Kerr fell in the home straight and was beaten to gold by Ben Pattison.

Dina Asher-Smith ran a British championships record of 22.18sec to win the women’s 200m.

And there was a shock in the women’s 1500m when the Olympic silver medalist, Laura Muir, finished ­second behind Georgia Bell.

The 2024 Olympic Games start in Paris on 26 July.
