Harry's message in a bottle ended up in Denmark

A five year old boy from Sunderland had an unexpected surprise when his message in a bottle was found in a different country months later.

Harry says he was "super excited" when he discovered the bottle he threw off a pier had made its way hundreds of miles across the sea to Denmark.

Harry and his 12-year-old sister Grace each threw a glass bottles off Roker Pier in Sunderland on 28 August 2023.

Seven months later, on 6 March 2024, their mother got a message to say Harry's had been found.

"I couldn't believe it," she said.

The bottle was found by Frederik Bilgrav Schramm from Romo in Denmark and he sent some photos of it back to the family.

He said: "It was most likely washed ashore somewhat earlier, as it has been at least two months since the water was so high up there where we found it."

Harry's mum says the bottle travelled in a straight line from the pier to where it was found in Denmark.

She says her son thought it was going to end up back on the beach in Sunderland.

Harry's message told people what to do if they found it

Harry, Grace and their father had been testing the bottles to make sure they could float and wrote messages on little scrolls inside.

Harry also drew a picture, which was included inside his bottle - and the message was followed by his mum's contact details.

Grace's note was similar to her brother's and the family are waiting to see if hers turns up next.

"A lot of people have even said now they want to try it," said Harry's mum. "We genuinely never thought the bottles would ever be found, it was just something fun we wanted to do with the kids, but we always hoped they might be found."
