Texting 'doesn't stop kids learning formal English'

A new study suggests that sending text messages with unusual grammar and spelling doesn't stop children learning the rules of the English language.

Over 160 children aged 8 to 16 years old took part in the study.

The researchers compared spelling and grammar in formal tests to the children's text messages, once at the start of the project and again after a year.

The results showed the most creative texters were among the best spellers.

The work was carried out by researchers at Coventry University and the University of Tasmania in Australia.
