A small town in the American state of California has been invaded by millions of locusts.

The creatures, which are similar to grasshoppers, are known for their big appetites.

Their arrival in Herald, Sacramento County, is bad news for local farmers who grow crops.

For two weeks they have been eating everything in their path, including the sign outside one lady's house.

There are so many, local people say it's almost impossible to get rid of them.

Locusts fly in swarms that can fly, or migrate, over very large distances.

Locust swarms vary from less than one square kilometre to several hundred square kilometres.

There can be from 40 million to as many as 80 million locust adults in each square kilometre of a swarm.

They are most commonly found in Africa, Asia and Indian subcontinent.

They can eat up entire fields of crops, and can travel very fast.
