Taksim Square protests: Photographic tour
At the centre of nationwide anti-government protests in Turkey is an Istanbul park which is threatened with demolition. Demonstrators have set up home in Gezi Park and Taksim Square and created makeshift facilities. Click on the labels below to explore the protesters' camp

Tents
Some young protesters have been sleeping in Gezi Park for over a week. Many were without shelter to start with but, as the days wore on and rain threatened, they erected donated tents.
Mini garden
At one end of Gezi Park, two trees have been removed for the construction of the new mall. Protesters have planted flowers on the spot where the trees once stood.
Open library
An open library has been set up using concrete blocks for shelves. People bring books and exchange them for others without money changing hands.
Food donations
Inside Gezi Park, and at other locations around the square, volunteers have set up grocery points where people can donate food or medicine. The food is free to those who need it.
Protest museum
A protest museum has been set up in one of the buildings near Gezi Park. Pictures of the protest are displayed, and protesters, tourists or others can write comments on the walls.
Wishing post
People have begun sticking notes onto a burnt-out truck. They contain grievances against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and wishes for the future. One reads: "We want to breathe fresh air but without Tayyip", another: "My dear people alcohol is forbidden, kisses,Tayyip... No, I am joking with the kisses, that is also forbidden!".
Graffiti bus
In Mete road, two burned out buses have been covered in graffiti. Couples and families come to be photographed near the new landmarks.
Ataturk Cultural Centre
Banners are hung on the Ataturk Cultural Centre - an opera house, arts and exhibition space - which is due to be demolished as part of the redevelopment of Taksim Square.
First aid centre in a cafe
A first aid clinic was set up in a Starbucks cafe on the second day of demonstration. People have donated medicines and volunteer doctors and nurses treat protesters. In the unrest across Turkey, several people are reported to have died and thousands have been injured.
Monument of the Republic
The Monument of the Republic, which dates from 1928, dominates Taksim Square. It portrays the founders of the republic: Kemal Ataturk and others. People are sleeping here, under tents or directly on the ground.
Political message
A socialist protest message appeared on a spot where construction is taking place.
