Town centre motorists have signed a 200-name petition opposing plans for parking restrictions in Welshpool, Powys.

Powys council is consulting on proposals to create a single standard for on-street waiting times and yellow line restrictions across the county.

But extending some double yellow lines was opposed at a town council meeting.

Members of a sports centre have handed in a petition calling for on-street parking at Woodside to be retained.

The town council has given its backing to a raft of changes around the town but it is opposed to wider restrictions at Woodside and Howells Drive.

That decision has been welcomed by Chris Greatorex, manager at Armoury Sports Centre, Brook Street, whose members added their name to a petition to allow surrounding streets to continue to be used for "safe parking".

However, Powys councillors will make the final decision at a later date.

The county council took over responsibility for parking regulations from the police in 2011.

It is consulting with all town and community councils as it wants to standardise arrangements, saying there are currently different regulations in different areas.

Welshpool Town Council's website published a report on the affecting the town earlier this month but revised its views for Woodside and Howells Drive on Thursday evening after further local consultation.
