People in Aberystwyth could soon be watching what goes on at their monthly town council meetings on the web.

The town council is set to examine a proposal to stream its meetings on its website.

Town clerk Jim Griffiths said the idea was in the early stages and councillors would have to discuss the pros and cons.

In June, Carmarthenshire council said it was considering showing videos of meetings on its website.

It followed criticism of the local authority after a blogger was arrested for filming a Carmarthenshire council meeting.

The council said at the time that filming was not allowed in its chamber.

In Aberystwyth, town clerk Mr Griffiths said councillors would consider a pilot project to stream monthly town council meetings live on the internet.

He said: "It has been suggested that the council could be used as a pilot for showing democracy in action.

"This idea is very much in the early stages. Members will have to discuss the pros and cons of such an action, and the costs of such an exercise will have to be considered."

He said showing meetings on the council's website could enable members of the public, who are unable to attend meetings, a chance to witness decisions being taken.
