It is hoped five major aerospace companies will be operating from an airport in west Wales under plans to update its facilities.

West Wales Airport Ltd in Blaenannerch, Ceredigion, has submitted a planning application to replace its control tower and buildings with new ones.

An extended taxiway is also included in the proposal.

It is also hoped the plans will provide a "significant employment boost" to the area.

The airport said in a statement in support of the application it was "well recognised for its unique capabilities" in the drone sector, which had created a "high level of demand" for its services.

It said the five unnamed aerospace companies had expressed a wish to operate as permanent, if not long-term, residents of the airport from April 2024.

The statement said the existing buildings were no longer fit for purpose and and a new control tower would function as a centre for radar data, communication systems and control of flight operations.
