12,000 Cardiff customers have lost supply completely or are experiencing low pressure

A burst water pipe forced the closure of nine schools and affected about 12,000 people in Cardiff.

Llanedeyrn Primary, Glan Yr Afon, Bryn Hafod, St Bernadettes, Hollies, Pen Y Groes, Bryn Celyn, Berllan Deg and St Teilo's schools all shut.

Welsh Water said customers either lost supply or experienced low pressure, so has set up a bottled water station at Eastern Leisure Centre.

Supplies were restored on Monday evening, the company said.

It added that as the supplies return to normal customers may experience either low water pressure or discoloured water.

It said this was not unusual after a burst of this nature and should clear within a short period of time.

Cardiff Council said it was alerted to the problem at about 05:30 GMT and was advised that two properties were in danger of flooding, so sent an officer out with sandbags.

Welsh Water said: "Following the burst in Llanederyn earlier this morning, we have successfully managed to reconfigure the water network in the area so supplies to customers in the CF23 and CF3 areas are now returning.

"Our teams will be continuing to undertake the repair work to the pipe and will be working into the night to complete this, and we would like to apologies for any inconvenience caused by the burst and thank customers for bearing with us."
