A secondary school on the Western Isles has paid tribute to a pupil who died in what has been described as a tragic incident on Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency services were called to The Nicolson Institute in Stornoway on Lewis following concerns for Anton Michael.

The 15-year-old died at Western Isles Hospital.

In a statement, the school said Anton was a "lovely young man who was well regarded by staff and pupils".

The teenager made a "very positive contribution" to the school and his death had affected all staff and pupils, the statement said.

Emergency services personnel were thanked for their efforts in trying to save his life.

The statement said: "Our thoughts at this time are with Anton's parents, family and friends."

Support services, including a 24-hour helpline, have been put in place for staff and pupils.

Western Isles local authority, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, and the school said it was a tragic incident.

Police Scotland said there were no suspicious circumstances and a report would be sent to the procurator fiscal.

A police spokesman said: "Police Scotland attended the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway shortly after 14:30 on Tuesday following concern for a 15-year-old male.

"He was conveyed to Western Isles Hospital where he has since died.

"There are no suspicious circumstances and as with all sudden deaths a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal."

The comhairle said "appropriate support mechanisms" were available to staff and pupils.
