A viable device has been removed for forensic examination following a security alert in north Belfast.

The alert in Balholm Drive and Brompton Park in the Ardoyne area has now ended, police said.

It is understood about 20 homes were evacuated on Monday morning. Residents have now returned to their homes.

Army technical officers had been working close to The Crumlin Star bar on Balholm Drive following the discovery of a suspicious object.

Police received a report at about 03:55 BST on Monday.

All roads have now reopened and police inquiries are continuing.

The alert caused disruption to the community.

Young families and pensioners received a knock on the door at about 06:00 BST telling them to leave their homes and they scrambled to go to neighbours and friends.

Postal services were affected and some businesses were unable to open.

Sinn FΓ©in assembly member for north Belfast Gerry Kelly said the Ardoyne Community Centre had been opened for residents.
