A man has died and four people, including two children, were hurt in a crash in Northumberland.

A white Hyundai i20 and a black Nissan Qashqai crashed just after 10:00 GMT on Saturday on the A1 at its junction with the B6349 at Belford.

The 86-year-old driver of the Hyundai died at the scene, police said.

The occupants of the other vehicle, a man, a woman and two children, were taken to hospital and have since been discharged.

The family of the man who died is being supported by specialist officers.

A section of the road was closed in both directions by police and reopened several hours later.

Sgt Steve Armstrong, from Northumbria Police, said: "A number of enquiries are ongoing to establish exactly what has happened in the lead up to the collision and the full circumstances."
