A woman has been arrested after a three-year-old girl was left critically ill when she was hit by a van.

Merseyside Police said a silver van hit the child who had just got out of a Nissan Qashqai in Welton Road, Bromborough, at about 16:10 BST.

A 37-year-old woman from Leasowe, Wirral, was arrested on suspicion of driving while on drugs and in relation to child protection offences.

The girl remains in hospital where she is described as "critical but stable".

Welton Road runs through the Croft Retail Park.
